Sustainable travel and ecotourism

“Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.” (TIES, 1990)

Eco travel, sustainable tourism, responible travel, ethical tourism or culturally aware travel fall under the same umbrella.

Principles of Ecotourism and sustainable travel:Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel.

This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following ecotourism principles:

  • Minimize impact.

  • Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.

  • Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.

  • Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.

  • Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.

  • Raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental, and social climate.

Our commitment

  • For every guest that travel with us, we donate equipment and supplies to the Tambopata Macaw Project in the south-east of the Amazon rainforest.

  • We contract local guides.

  • We recommend our guests to buy souvenirs and handicrafts from known local artists.

  • The hotels we use have a clearly implemented sustainability policy and hire local people.

  • We choose to visit villages and communities off the beaten track.

  • When possible we choose organic and locally grown vegetables.

The donation to the Macaw Project is a very important and efficient way of directly and hands-on helping to preserve the wonderful diversity of the rainforest.

A few easy things everyone can do to reduce environmental impact:

  • Save water and electricity (this is important wherever you are!)

  • Pack light and bring clothes that are easy to wash and dries quickly.

  • You have hear the phrase “Leave only footprints” before. Keep it in mind always.

  • Use the mindset of a visitor that seek to learn about the local culture and traditions. Show respect and curiosity. We are visiting and exploring on the terms of the people living in the area. Not the other way around.
