Explore the historical part of Lima during the morning and try an amazing ceviche prepared the traditional way. In the afternoon we go to the colonial city of Cajamarca by domestic flight. Overnight stay in the city.

Day 3: Leymebamba

We start early and make our way to a small town called Leymebamba, the home of the marvellous spatuletail hummingbird and many more rare species of birds. Enjoy the amazing landscape as we cross the Andean highlands. Arrival in Leymebamba in the afternoon. Overnight stay.

Day 4: Leymebamba

Early in the morning we will explore the surroundings for rare birds with a local expert guide. In the afternoon we will visit a museum and learn about the ancient cultures of the area. Overnight stay.

Day 5: Kuelap fortress

As we continue north we will visit the impressive fortress of Kuelap situated on a mountain top offering breathtaking views. The fortress dates back to about 900 AD and its massive walls reaches up to 18 meters. This was the city and stronghold of the Chachapoya culture, the dominating culture of the region from around 800 AD to the 14th century. We will reach the small town of Cocachimba later afternoon. Overnight stay.

Day 6: Gocta waterfall - the recently discovered third highest in the world

One of the big hightlights of this region is the beautiful waterfall Gocta with two falls that together measure 771 meters. This incredible waterfall has been hidden from the world up until only about seven years ago when it was discoved by a German explorer. It takes about 2,5 hours to hike through dense cloudforest to reach the fall. If we are lucky we can spot Peru's national bird the Andean cock-of-the-rock. Back in the town for lunch and relax for the rest of the afternoon. Overnight stay in Cocachimba.

Day 7: Huembo

Huembo is a protected area located close to Pomacochas. There is an ongoing project of reforestation together with the local community to plant trees native to the region to help restore the threatened natural habitats. Between Pomacochas and the Alto Mayo are great misty mountains where some animal species live that appear to have leapt from the pages of an enchanted story. Here and nowhere else in the entire world we can see the Marvelous Spatuletail hummingbird, the yellow-tailed woolly monkey, and the Long-whiskered Owlet. These are species that would not survive if not for the individuals and communities that dedicate themselves to their conservation. Overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 8 - 9: Abra Patricia

Located not far from Huembo is another forest conservation project and the Owlet Lodge. Here we will spend two nights exploring the beautiful mountain forest and with some luck spot rare endemic and threatened species of the area with an expert local guide. Overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 10: Waqanki orchid garden in Moyobamba

We now leave the misty mountains and cross a great plain to the city of Moyobamba where we will enjoy two nights at a lodge outside of the city dedicated to preserving nature. Waqanki is a family owned business that have for more than 20 years created an extensive collection of orchids. Close by you can find hot springs and a café where you can try the locally produced coffee and homemade ice cream. Overnight stay at Waqanki.

Day 11: Paccha waterfall

Just an hour from Waqanki is an amazing waterfall, we spend the morning relaxing and swimming in its clear pools. Overnight stay at Waqanki.
